TPS Competition Results – PDIs Round 1

TPS Competition Results – PDIs Round 1

Our new TPS competition season kicked off in style last night with the first round of our PDI (Projected Digital Images) competition, expertly judged by Paul Graber LRPS.

We had so many entries this year our Competition Secretary elected to restrict all entrants to just one image, but this still left us with 38 Club Class and 18 Advanced Class photos to enjoy.

As our guest judge commented, the quality of the entries was very high, giving him a difficult task of picking out his favourites. If you took part, well done for getting involved. The scores are always interesting, but the most important thing for us all is that we took time to carefully consider each image and, hopefully, learned something new to help improve our own photography skills.

A few of our members got the year off to a flying start with perfect scores of 10 points! Well done to Gary Coomber, Laura Barsi, Peter Beard, Toni Pearson, Marie-Ange Bouchard, Sarah Bedwell and Steve Elms.

The full scores and (very early!) league tables are now available from our Results page.

I’ve collated all the images that scored a magnificent 9 points or more and shared them in the galleries below. Enjoy!

Advanced Class

On Thursday 03 October, we’ll be meeting in the Godstone Baptist Church Hall, next to the Shell Service Station. On arrival, take the alleyway to the right-hand side of the main entrance, and enter the hall via the side door. DON’T FORGET: Bring along a few (2 or 3) images on a USB stick for Marcus and John’s Friendly Photo Critique.

Now get out with your camera and take some photos!

Next Month – CameraWorld LIVE in London

TPS Members thinking about buying new camera kit, or just exploring their options, may be interested in taking a trip up to CameraWorld LIVE London next month.

Tickets cost £5 in advance (or £8 on the door) and give full-day access to industry experts, demonstrations and tutorials. Plus, there will be the usual massive range of cameras and accessories from all the major brands, many on sale at below web prices. There will also be some special seminar and workshop sessions during the day, but please note additional payments may apply.

The show takes place at 155 Bishopsgate, near Liverpool Street Station, from 10am-5pm on Saturday 26 October 2019.

If you have unwanted camera gear, take it with you and CameraWorld staff will be on hand to offer you a fair price for their second-hand sale stall.

And, why not be smart and buddy up with other TPS members to make a day of it and put your new kit or skills to the test with some London snaps to round off the day?!

And we’re off! Best Prints Competition Results

First up, big thanks to everyone who joined our TPS Welcome Evening last night. We had a packed house and we hope you’re as excited about the 2019-20 TPS programme of events as we are.

For visitors and prospective new members, please send in your Joining Form as quickly as possible to secure a place (details here). We’re very close to our maximum membership number. Please send your form promptly to Jon Cowdock via And remember to also let him know if you’d like to join his excellent New Member Sessions.

And, er,…speaking of Jon…

Last night, you picked your favourite prints from the 2018-19 season. The voting procedure was designed by Jon, the votes were counted by Jon, and, guess what, Jon won both competitions! Clever Jon!

But seriously, Jon Cowdock LRPS is the very worthy winner of these prestigious club awards, having presented two stunning prints that performed well in their original competitions and were rightly chosen by you as the very best of the best.

Here, for your enjoyment—and inspiration for your next photo outing—are the winning images:

Heading for Home
Winner of 2018-19 Shirley Daniell Shield
(Members’ Favourite Colour Print)
Frozen Stiff
Winner of 2018-19 Ursula Spicer Trophy
(Members’ Favourite Monochrome Print)

(to be fair, those .jpg files don’t really do justice to the outstanding quality of Jon’s finished prints)

Don’t forget, this Saturday 14 September we’ve a very casual stroll around Godstone for our first Out & About. This is a perfect opportunity for you to dust off your camera or smartphone and head out with fellow photographers to find some interesting sights around the village. Full details here.

And next Thursday 19 September, we’ll welcome our first expert speaker of the season, the very talented still life photographer Polina Plotnikova. Full details here.

Happy snapping!
