Out and About is the daft name we give to TPS outings organised on an informal basis where members visit places of interest, practise their photography and spend time together (with essential refreshment stops included!)
We offer a range of outings – weekdays and weekends, daytimes and evenings, local and further afield, town and country. Wherever possible, there is no restriction on numbers; friends and family members are usually very welcome. Just ask!
There is no set schedule for the year and we keep members informed of forthcoming events as they are confirmed. Members are also welcome to offer suggestions for outings (or even to organise them). If you would like to join in or have ideas for places to visit, please email our ‘Out & About’
Finally, we have a TPS Out and About Flickr page where members share and comment on photos taken on our outings. Please let Dominic know via email to email@example.com if you would like to join the Flickr group.
Upcoming Out & Abouts
London Illuminated River Project
- Date – Sunday 17 November 2019
- Time – late afternoon / early evening
The first four bridges of the London Illuminated River project (https://illuminatedriver.london/) are now lit up at night. This celebrates London’s historic links with its river. At twilight, we will view and photograph London, Cannon Street, Southwark and the Millennium bridges from the Southbank (and, doubtless, much else in this thriving part of the city).
John Proctor, brother of TPS Member Clare Pickett, has been commissioned to install these lights and will be coming to speak briefly to club members on Thursday 7 November about the project. Take a look at his website.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
3.30 pm – meet in Pret A Manger (40 Stoney St, London SE1 9LB). This is on the river bank walk, about 50m west of the Golden Hinde.
4.00 – 6.00 pm (approx) – take photographs of the bridges and the South Bank area. Sunset that evening is at 4.08pm. It will be crowded, so we will probably splinter into groups.
6.00 pm (approx) – meet again in Pret A Manger for refreshments before heading home.
Please let Dominic know (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you’d like to come along on this trip.
Recent Out & Abouts
Buoyed by England’s success in the Rugby World Cup semi-final and keen to dodge the predicted rain, eleven of us (including seven new members) met up in Limpsfield on 26 October for a morning’s photography. With local resident John Nathan on hand to provide expert guidance, we strolled around the village, taking in views of the churchyard, high street and woods before sheltering in the local pub just as the skies opened.
Enjoy some of Dominic’s photos below:
On 14 September, eleven eager TPS member met up in Godstone to stroll around the village, taking in early Autumn views of the green, churchyard, fields, farmland and the two lakes before retiring to The White Barn for some well-earned refreshment.
London City street walk
Once again, Sarah and Simon acted as our guides for a day out in March. With plenty of refreshment stops, eighteen of us ambled around London Bridge and The City, taking in opportunities for architecture (old and new) and street photography. Members were encouraged to try some film photography and take part in the ‘50mm challenge’.
Don McCullin exhibition at Tate Britain
Ten of us met up in Victoria on a chilly February day before strolling towards Pimlico and the river. This afforded a variety of opportunities for city and street photography. After lunch in the Tate, we spent the afternoon viewing Don McCullin’s inspiring and especially poignant war photographs.
Chilling in Hastings
In January, thirteen hardy souls braved the cold to spend a day taking photos in at Hastings. Guided by Simon and Sarah, we took in a variety of photo opportunities – the beach, the pier, the town, fishing boats and Bottle Alley. Tripods were in evidence and conditions proved perfect for some very atmospheric photography. At appropriate times, we took refuge in cafes for warming respite.
Walking Tour in Woldingham
Seventeen of us, TPS members and guests, met up in Woldingham for a Sunday morning circular walk along the valley. This was followed by the all-important refreshment stop at The Dean, Knight’s Garden Centre. The morning afforded excellent opportunities for a range of landscape and countryside photography.
London Christmas Twilight River Walk
Fourteen intrepid TPS photographers braved the December cold in London and got some great images from our capital city. We took in a variety of views of the Thames and the majestic London skyline as the light gradually faded. And, as ever, there were plenty of opportunities for street photography. London is just a short journey away – why not take a trip into town with your camera and see what you can snap? Or better still, team up with some TPS friends and help us create another great Out & About experience!
Crossness Pumping Station
TPS Members visited (and photographed!) a Victorian masterpiece of engineering. Built by Joseph Bazelgette in the 19th century, it was the pumping station for the first large sewage system in London. It is not a sewage works
We held an informal Out and About around our TPS home village of Godstone and members grabbed some great shots:
As always, more photos can be seen on our Out & About Flickr Page.
